Buying a Kids’ Drum Set
The drum sets for children serve a valuable purpose and are a great, affordable way for your child to learn the joy of percussion. Kids’ drum sets have everything children age 3 – 12 need to begin practicing, playing and developing their musical skills.
Drum sets for children are not designed to take the heavier, harder play of teens and adults, but they are durable enough for youngsters. A typical kids’ mini-set includes three drums and a single cymbal. The mini-kit is the logical starting place. If the child becomes more dedicated, a broader experience will become necessary.
At that point a children’s drum set that includes a sturdier, more durable bass drum, snare drum, mounted tom, a bass drum pedal and a cymbal, throne (seat) would fill the most basic needs. The child who has mastered the mini-set is most likely capable of handling hi-hat cymbals, another floor tom and additional stands.
Some children’s drum sets may include a drum key for tuning, a pair of kids’ drumsticks, educational drumming booklets, and extra stools. One size fits all with children’s drum sets. The stool, and stands are usually adjustable but the purchaser may want to make certain the set offers that flexibility.
For children under ten years old, the bass drum should be between 12 and 14″ in diameter. For older children a bass 16 inches in diameter is a comfortable size.
Parents will need to decide if they are looking for a children’s drum set or for a beginner’ s drum set. The factors contributing to this decision are the age and size of the child, the child’s level of interest and level of play. If the child seems ready to play for a few years, the beginner’s set may be the most fitting purchase.
Most children’s drum sets feature real wood and sturdy hardware. While not durable enough for teenagers or adults, these sets can withstand the “rough play” of beginning children. Sets with this type durability are a better investment than plastic starters. Beginner sets provide double braced hardware for increased stability and durability. With proper care and maintenance, these sets will last until the beginner is ready for the next step.
Most children’s drum sets arrive pre-assembled. A drum kit will help with the finishing touches. Adjust the throne make sure the child can reach the pedals and stand clear. Hours of thrills and a lifetime pursuit are about to come true.
